  • Wings of Uncertainty

Gravity is real, but, with the proper preparations, it’s negotiable.

    ‘Thing Crash’ by Ana

Attempting some new venture is kind of like trying to fly. All of the forces around us and inside of us tell us it is impossible. They want nothing more than to pull us back down to Earth where we belong. In order to overcome these forces, we have to be persistent, perhaps even a little bit crazy. We aren’t meant to fly, after all.

When we are faced with new opportunities or challenges, we will feel drawn back to the things we are used to. Because that which is new is perceived as difficult and frightening, we are pulled, from within and without, back to our old habits, familiar places, and the people we feel most comfortable with, even if they are not good for us.

This pull back to the familiar, even when it is unhealthy for us, be that physically, emotionally, or spiritually, is only natural. We are creatures of habit who have evolved to seek out the familiar and to fear that which is new. In order to do something big, to do something creative, or to do something that will change our lives, we must defy this natural instinct and step out into the unknown.

At some point, we must test our wings. The worst thing that can happen is that we fall, but then we are only back to where we started. If we truly believe in ourselves and our vision, we will get back up, make some adjustments, and try again. Perhaps we were meant to fly, after all. There is only one way to find out.

  • Wealth in Pennies

“Most people don’t realize that you can have a million dollars in pennies.” -Anonymous

Several years ago, I was talking to a friend of mine who is also a business owner. He told me that it really bothered him to see how easy it was for people to discard pennies as if they were trash. “Most people don’t realize that you can have a million dollars in pennies,” he said.

Obviously, physically possessing a million dollars in pennies is impractical, but the point is that small, seemingly insignificant things can add up to something large and impactful over time. Most people do not simply come upon wealth, talent, or skill overnight.

Nearly all good things are accumulated slowly. They are the result of saving one penny, shipping one project, or performing one repetition at a time, consistently, over a long period of time. Luck is unreliable, so save your pennies.

  • Strategically Ignoring That Which Matters Least

You cannot do everything. Choose wisely.

‘Bird in a Hurricane’ by Ana

After being a general manager of a coffee shop for a few months, my district manager came in for a visit. It was obvious to him that I was a bit overwhelmed. We talked about how things were going. I told him that I was having trouble keeping up with everything, all of the day-to-day demands of the job, as well as the ever changing company priorities and initiatives.

He was a thoughtful, direct man, as strict as he was sincere. He took a moment to pause, looked at me and said, “A lot of things are going to come at you every day, from all directions. Your job is to decide what to ignore.” As this slowly sunk in, I breathed a sigh of relief.

If everything is important, nothing is important. If everything is an emergency, nothing is an emergency. It is better to give the few most important tasks on our to-do list our full attention and to make the others wait their turn than it is to try to accomplish everything at once and do them all poorly or not get them done at all.

  • Be Who You Are With Kindness

Be yourself, but first, be kind.

    ‘Orange Rock’ by Ana

It is important to be authentic and honest, but it is more important to temper that with humility and compassion. Without humility and compassion, it becomes easy to deceive ourselves into thinking that authenticity and honesty mean saying whatever we feel like to whomever we feel like saying it.

If being authentic means being unkind and if being honest means being cruel, what does that say about who we really are deep down?

If, in order to be authentic or honest, we must put others down, criticize them, or mock them, perhaps we would all be better off with a bit more pretending. Others do not need to fail in order for us to succeed. We do not have to belittle others in order us to stand tall.

We do not need to be fake, but we do need to be kind. The point is not to be ourselves in spite of the world around us. Instead, we must try to make the world better through our presence, our words, and our deeds.

  • One Thing For One Day

Do one thing to challenge yourself today. Tomorrow, do that again.

    ‘Blurry Handprint’ by Ana

The idea of doing something difficult, consistently, for a week, a month, a year, or for many years is daunting and, depending on the task, may even seem impossible. It is much less intimidating to simply commit to do that difficult thing today. It is only one thing and you only need to do it for one day.

Do this again tomorrow. Then do it the next day and the day after that. Remember, it is only one thing and you only need to do it for one day.

If you do one thing to challenge yourself for enough days in a row, and then you look back, you will find that you have made progress. Progress tends to inspire us to strive for more progress. When we get far enough away from our starting point, we cannot help but to keep moving forward.

Move forward by doing one challenging thing for one day. Then, repeat.
