  • Feelings Do Not Work

It is highly unlikely that your boss calls you every morning to ask you if you feel like going to work.

Your feelings have very little to do with it.

You go to work because it is your job to do so.

Why, then, do we think that we have to wait until our feelings are right before doing something that matters?

Why are we waiting to find ‘our passion’ before seeking greatness in our lives?

What if it were our job to do something that matters, to seek greatness in our lives, and to make positive change in the world?

What if our feelings had nothing to do with it?

It is quite likely that, much like our work, the effort we put into everything we do has more to do with the results, benefits, and outcomes we will get than the feelings we have while doing it.

Instead of waiting for our feelings to be right, instead of waiting to find our passion, maybe we should start by showing up and doing the work.

Our greater purpose is not going to call us to ask us if we feel like showing up any more than our boss is.

We have to show up for our greater purpose just like we show up for our job.

That means showing up on time, without excuses, and ready to put in whatever amount of effort it takes to get the job done.

  • First Chances

No matter what we may think, no matter what we tell ourselves, and no matter what others may say, we could not have done things differently.

We could not have made different choices.

We could not have made better decisions.

We could not have been someone other than who we were in that moment.

    We were who we were.

    We thought what we thought.

    We said what we said.

    We did what we did.

It happened the way it happened.

    There is no going back

There is no changing the past.

    There are no second chances.

There are only first chances and we have a lot of those ahead of us as long as we keep showing up.

With the knowledge of our past and the wisdom we have gained from it, we have to do better this time, in this moment, in this first chance.

Otherwise, all of those missed, wasted, or fumbled first chances behind us were all for nothing.

  • Action Over Knowledge

What we know cannot save us from who we are.

Knowledge by itself is not enough to change us.

We must take positive action in the direction of the change we seek.

Hoping that change will occur through understanding or desire alone is a fantasy.

Our actions prove our sincerity and affirm our decision.

  • Let It Breathe

We are not meant to understand all that we experience.

    We can’t.

All that happens to us and around us is simply too much for us to perceive, process, and manage with our finite minds and emotions.

We will go crazy trying to figure it all out.

It will overwhelm us, causing us undue confusion and frustration.

This will make us less effective for those who need us most.

Sometimes we simply need to let things be what they are.

We need to resist the temptation to understand, to wrap our minds around what is happening, and to process it with logic, reason, and meaning.

Some experiences are better off without our interpretation and interference.

We need to let these things breathe.

We need to let ourselves breathe.

  • Unwanted Freedom

People tell us they do not love us in different ways.

Some tell us in words, some in actions, some in absence, distance, or time.

But, when they tell us they do not love us, regardless of how they do so, we should believe them.

Trying to convince them otherwise will only prolong the inevitable.

Attempting to negotiate, buy time, or earn ourselves a second chance will not, it cannot, make someone love us who does not.

Love, unlike trust, respect, and admiration, is not something we can earn back no matter how hard we try.

    Love must be chosen.

    It must be given.

We cannot make another person do this.

They must choose it for themselves and they must give it of their own free will.

If they have decided that they do not, cannot, or perhaps never did love us, we have to come to accept this fact.

Fighting against it will not change it.

By coming to terms with this truth, we are able to move on.

By giving us the opportunity to do so, the person who does not love us is doing us a favor.

They are giving us freedom and, while freedom may not be what we desire, freedom is a gift.

Albeit, freedom does not always feel good, as anyone who has had their heart broken knows all too well.

Regardless of how we feel about it, however, we must move on, keeping in mind that not being loved by one person does not make us unloveable.

It simply means that there is one less person out there for us to waste our time on while we seek out someone who does.
