  • Empathetic Boundaries

We can empathize with others without being moved to act.

Not all problems require a solution.

In fact, not all problems have a solution.

    Some problems are simply problems.

Even if a solution is available, however, our intervention is not always necessary, advisable, or even desirable.

There are times when merely feeling for someone is enough, when compassion without action is the best we can do.

    Empathy must have boundaries.

Without boundaries, empathy makes us susceptible to the whims of emotion.

Of course we should have feelings and they should inform our decisions and actions to some degree, but feelings can lie, deceive, and manipulate.

Healthy boundaries tell us where the dividing line between feeling and action must be drawn.

  • The Cycle of Criticism

When we criticize others, we open ourselves up to criticism.

We set ourselves up against an impossible standard.

As soon as we, ourselves, make a mistake, which will inevitably happen, our own words and attitudes toward others become ammunition to be used against us.

    No one is perfect.

We all have flaws and make mistakes.

Knowing this, it is far better to humbly accept the humanness of those around us than to condemn them for attitudes and behaviors we are likely to exhibit ourselves, in some way, at one point or another.

This does not mean we should quietly endure verbal, physical, or emotional abuse from anyone.

    We should not.

We should, however, be careful to not become the abuser in our attempt to protect ourselves from abuse.

More often than not, condemnation of others for their words or actions, makes us more vulnerable than it makes us strong, opening us up to attack when our shortcomings eventually reveal themselves.

  • A Solid Foundation

Integrity alone does not guarantee happiness, but it does give us a solid foundation off of which to seek it.

Lack of integrity, on the other hand, puts our emotional and psychological well-being in the hands of others.

And the truth is, even the most well intended people cannot take care of us in the ways we always need.

  • Drawn Into Conflict

We live in a world full of broken people, but we need not be broken by them.

Some people are so unhappy that their only goal from day to day is to make others unhappy as well.

They go out of their way to pull others into their misery.

By intentionally causing conflict, they draw attention toward themselves or their agenda and away from the things that matter.

If we give them the attention they seek, that is our choice.

Moreover, if, through our attention, we give them the power to affect our thoughts, emotions, and actions, that is also our choice.

Our emotional and psychological integrity is ours to maintain.

No one else will do it for us.

  • Through The Moment

When the destination ahead is unclear…

When the path before us is uncertain…

When our burdens feel too cumbersome to bear…

When we feel too tired to go on…

And rest is not an option…

We should focus on our feet.

Focus on the next step forward.

    Do the next right thing.

    Remain in the moment.

Put on a smile and embrace the task at hand.

And if we can do this from moment to moment to moment, we may discover that our destination reveals itself…

The path before us becomes clear…

    Our burdens become lighter…

    Our exhaustion fades…

And we are given the strength to carry on.

Because we need only take one more step.
