Meditations on God

  • Choosing Attitude

Life will not always go your way.

When it doesn’t, you have two options.

On one hand, you can be upset, angry, or self-pitying, wishing things were different than they are.

On the other hand, you can accept what life is offering you as a gift, embrace it as an opportunity to grow, and face it as a challenge to be overcome.

In both cases, what is happening does not change.

The only difference in each circumstance is your attitude.

Regardless of what is happening around you or to you, your attitude is the one variable you always have control over.

You get to decide whether this will make you unhappy or whether your happiness is not contingent upon external conditions.

This decision will determine the quality of your life to a much greater degree than whatever happens around you or to you.

    Choose your attitude wisely.

  • Courageous Action

If you wait for the perfect conditions to arise before doing something courageous, you will never do anything courageous.

You can try to prepare yourself to be courageous, but there will always be more that you can do.

You can work harder, plan better, consider more contingencies, and mitigate more risks.

At some point, however, you simply have to act.

You have to do the thing you are scared of.

Of course, you want to be both courageous and safe, but courage is not required when there is no risk involved.

Vulnerability and courage go hand in hand.

You cannot be both perfectly safe and courageous at the same time.

Courage demands that you act in spite of your vulnerability, or even because of it.

Prepare as well as you can, hope for the perfect circumstances and timing, but when the opportunity arises and courage is required, you simply have to act.

Courage is proven through action not preparation.

  • Shared Success

You are responsible for your own growth and progress in this life.

No one else can do the work for you.

However, you can only grow and progress so much on your own.

Inevitably, you will need other people along the way.

As you work to improve and evolve as a person, as you pursue success in whatever way you define that for yourself, you are going to need assistance, guidance, and even partnership.

You are going to need community.

And through community, you may discover that your own growth, your own progress, and your own success is just a small part of something bigger and more meaningful.

Your experience of this life may be a solitary one, but the most rewarding and fulfilling experiences will mean significantly more along the way when they are shared with others.

  • Working With Nervousness

Being nervous about something that matters to you is normal.

Nervousness, like any other feeling, should not be ignored or denied.

You cannot simply wish or push away your feelings and expect them to disappear.

Your feelings exist, they are real, and they must be acknowledged.

If not, you actually give them power to rule over you in darkness.

It is far better to shine the light of truth on your feelings, to lean into them, and to ask them what they are trying to teach you.

Your feelings are not something happening to you.

    They are part of you.

    Learn to accept them.

When you are nervous, smile at your nervousness, welcome it in, and sit with it.

Embrace it like an old friend.

You have both been here before and you will be here again.

It is time to get to work, together.

  • Willing To Be Helped

    Let people help you.

You do not have to struggle by yourself.

    You are not alone.

There are people who have been where you are, who are on the other side of whatever you are going through, who want to help you overcome whatever challenges you are currently facing.

    Seek them out.

    Ask for help.

Do not let pride, shame, prejudice, or insecurity block you from your potential.

These attitudes only serve to keep you alone and afraid.

Humility, openness, and compassion are your allies.

WIth these on your side, you cannot fail as long as you are willing to do the work.

    Willingness goes a long way.
