  • A Whisper A Flicker

    People need you.

    Keep showing up.

Your presence and your attention matter.

You have a unique perspective and a unique contribution to make in the lives of those around you.

Your struggles and your suffering are not for nothing.

They are the fires that will forge you into the person you are destined to become.

But you cannot give up along the way.

You cannot give up on yourself.

You cannot give up on the hope inside you, no matter how faint and distant it may feel.

A whisper of truth, a flicker of light is all you need to change the world.

Listen to it, follow it, and nurture it.

Everything else is a distraction, except for love.

  • Deliberate Stress

Stress is not an inherently bad thing.

In fact, stress is necessary for you to grow.

In order to become smarter, stronger, and faster, your mind and body must be put through and recover from stress.

Avoiding stress altogether, therefore, is a mistake.

The right kind of stress is your friend and your ally.

Stress without purpose, however, is a problem.

Stress for stress’s sake is not helpful to you.

It wears you down and uses up the physical and mental resources you need for other things.

While unwanted stress cannot be avoided altogether, you should do your best to limit its impact on your life.

Interestingly, the best way to make your mind and body more resilient against unavoidable, unwanted stress that breaks you down is through regular and deliberate exposure to and recovery from the kinds of stress that builds you up.

Instead of avoiding stress, then, pursue it, but pursue the right kind of stress so that you will be able to handle unwanted stress when it inevitably comes your way.

  • In Your Own Way

Define your goals and then make a plan to accomplish them.

Just know that, if your goals are worthy of achieving, this will not be easy.

There will be challenges and obstacles along the way.

Life will get in the way, but you will also get in your own way.

Do not underestimate your ability to distract yourself from the things that you claim matter the most to you.

Once you have established a goal or a set of goals you want to achieve, your internal resistance will begin to build.

You will begin finding excuses to not do the work necessary to achieve what you set out to accomplish.

Other, lesser goals will begin to entice you and pull you away from your primary purpose.

These distractions will come in many forms, some of which will feel extremely important, but deep down you will know that they are simply a means of avoiding the real work that will push you toward that which is most important to you.

The work that must be done to accomplish anything worthwhile is going to be difficult.

The difficulty of this work often pales in comparison, however, to the discipline required to avoid distractions and to stay on task.

You have already determined what your goals are.

Now get out of your own way.

  • Self Care Is Not Selfish

    Self care is not selfish.

    It is necessary.

If you do not afford yourself sufficient rest, hydration, nutrition, exercise, and even play, you simply cannot care for others effectively.

This may seem like a long list and it is difficult to find a perfect balance with all of these facets of health, but it is essential that you try.

And, like all aspects of life, self care requires practice.

    It requires trial and error.

You are not going to get it right all at once.

Nor will what works for another person necessarily work for you.

In fact, what works for you today may not work for you tomorrow.

But taking care of your physical, emotional, and mental health is essential not only for your own wellbeing but for your ability to be of service to others.

If you do not take care of your health, inevitably someone else will have to take care of it for you.

If you do take care of your health, however, you are also able to care for others.

Self care, therefore, is not selfish.

  • Earned Truth

Be careful to not simply accept the opinions of others as your own.

Your experience in the world and with the people in it is uniquely your own.

Do not settle for living life through someone else’s perspective.

This is intellectually lazy and even dishonest.

    Live your own life.

    Explore, play, and experiment.

Form your own opinions and be willing to change your mind if necessary.

    Life is fluid and ever-changing.

There are certain truths that are constant, but they are elusive and are discovered slowly.

You must earn your truth through experience.

This means you must chase joy and pain alike because suffering is as great a teacher, if not better, than bliss.
