Meditations on God

  • Intention And Attention

Some of us are not capable of pretending.

We do not know how to show interest when we are uninterested.

We do not know how to pay attention when we are distracted.

We do not know how to appear enthralled when we are bored.

We do not know how to seem pleased when we are not.

We cannot say what we do not mean.

We also find it very difficult to restrain ourselves when we feel that something needs to be said.

From the outside, this may all appear very selfish and often quite cold or unkind.

If it were intentional, that may be true.

It really is not intentional, however.

Nor is it meant to be cruel.

It is just that our minds wander.

We lose focus very easily when something else has our interest or attention.

    We are not unfocused, however.

    In fact, we are hyper-focused.

It is just that our focus is on something others may not see or understand.

And, we cannot unfocus on whatever that is until we find some kind of resolution.

That is also why we tend to come off as overly direct and even abrasive.

We need to get our thoughts out so that we can be relieved of them.

This all may look to others like we do not care about them.

But, the truth is that we care a lot.

    We care too much, actually.

We care so much about everything that it overwhelms us.

We are so overtaken by our caring that sometimes it is all that we can do.

    Take this piece for example.

It was written because it had to come out.

    There was no other reason.

It felt as if it needed to be said.

    That is all.

  • A Moment Of Change

It is possible for our entire lives to be changed in a single moment.

In fact, every single moment is changing our entire lives whether we are conscious of it or not.

But, once we are conscious of these profound moments of transformation, we begin to appreciate them and to look for them.

We begin to be grateful for them.

Over time, we start to perceive even the most seemingly insignificant experiences and interactions in our lives as gifts of transformation that take us from who we were to who we are going to become.

Eventually, we come to see that our lives are made up entirely of these tiny transformative moments and we begin to choose each moment more carefully, hesitant to waste even a single one because we know that we will never get those moments back that we lose to distraction, carelessness, or ingratitude.

Each moment has the infinite potential to entirely change us, our lives, and the world around us for either the better or the worse.

As such, they are gifts that are not to be taken for granted.

  • Creating Our World

Some of us have more difficulty fitting into and adapting to this world than the people around us do.

While they seem to do this without much thought or effort, we struggle to find our place.

It is more than okay to admit that we are not like others.

In fact, it may be necessary for our happiness and our sanity.

By admitting that we are different, we give ourselves the freedom to forge our own path, to find our own way, and to create a new world for ourselves based on our unique needs.

People who fit neatly into the world have no reason to try to change it.

They simply plug in and get along.

But, for people who feel out of place, this feeling of dissonance or displacement often drives us to create.

    We become the change makers.

We have to or else our lives are nothing more than the perpetual discomfort of feeling alone and out of place.

Creativity becomes not only an outlet for expressing our ideas and feelings, but a means of justifying our existence and claiming our place in this world by making the world into a place more suitable for us.

  • Lighten Up

    Give yourself a break.

Don’t spoil yourself, pamper yourself, or put your selfish desires ahead of everything else.

    Just give yourself a break.

Don’t be so hard on yourself.

Be kind to yourself like you would a close friend.

Don’t ignore your responsibilities, buy things you cannot afford, or believe that you are owed anything in this life.

    Just lighten up a bit.

The problems of the world do not belong to you.

They are not your burden to bear alone.

Life is hard enough without you making it unnecessarily harder for yourself.

We would all do well with more compassion, kindness, and patience in our lives.

Why shouldn’t we have some for ourselves?

  • Our Boundaries

We have no right to be angry when we allow others to cross our boundaries.

Our integrity is ours, not theirs, to maintain.

Of course, people who respect us will also respect our boundaries, but only if we do first.

On the other hand, people who do not respect us may never respect our boundaries, but they can be taught or made to not cross them.

If they cannot, the onus is on us to distance ourselves from them so that they do not have the opportunity to impose themselves on us or make demands of us that we cannot or should not give into.

If we do none of this, however, if we do not respect our own boundaries and maintain our own integrity, we really cannot be angry or upset when others need, want, or require more from us than we have to offer.

It is not their responsibility to know where our limitations are.

The responsibility is ours to make it known in as clear yet respectful a way as possible.
