Meditations on God

  • Standards And Expectations

It is okay to have high standards.

Be aware, however, that high standards may lead to big disappointments.

You can balance this out by having realistic expectations.

    Life is complicated.

People will not always do as you wish.

You cannot prepare for every contingency, obstacle, or difficulty.

Acknowledge this truth, accept it, and embrace it.

    Make peace with disappointment.

Allow your standards to guide and motivate you.

Prepare for things to not go as planned, but do not accept mediocrity from yourself, your life, or your relationships.

  • Please Yourself

    Do what pleases you.

This is not a call to be selfish or hedonistic.

But when it comes to art, creativity, or any other kind of self expression, you are your most important audience.

Make what you would like to see, hear, taste, feel, or experience.

Draw, paint, write, sing, play, or build for yourself first.

Be your own number one fan.

If the world does not like what you make, so be it.

    At least you like it.

If, on the other hand, your work or your art resonates with others, if they say, “This is for me. I am like you,” then you have found your audience.

You have found your true fans.

But if you try to make what others will like, they still may not like it.

What’s worse is that you will not like it either, and this is unsustainable.

    So please yourself.

If nothing else, at least you will be doing work that you are proud of.

  • Postponing Happiness

If you postpone your happiness, assuming that you will find it in some future achievement, you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

Worthwhile achievements do not come easy.

    Failure is always an option.

If you are not happy before failure, you will probably not be happy after failure.

    Conversely, you may be successful.

You may accomplish your goals and achieve exactly that which you set out to achieve.

But achievement is not some magic pill that will solve all of your problems.

It may make you feel better for a brief moment, but you bring yourself with you wherever you go.

So who you are before you achieve your goals will be who you are after you achieve your goals.

    If anything, achievement amplifies unhappiness.

It shines a spotlight on the fact that happiness is not found through external means.

You must find something more permanent and reliable than achievement to base your happiness on.

    Look inside; do not wait.

  • Truth Will Out

Not everything that is true needs to be said.

In fact, most truths are better left unspoken.

If someone is incorrect about something and they are not asking for you to correct them, it is not your responsibility to do so.

This is especially true if their mistake or misunderstanding is not harming anyone.

Just let it be and let them be.

There are more important things to worry about than another person’s trivial, harmless errors.

Keep in mind that no one is perfect, least of all you, so give others the space to be wrong.

We all learn the lessons we need in our own time.

By having a little bit more patience, understanding, and compassion for others, you will be happier and so will they.

Life has a way of working these things out anyway.

You have more important work to do.

Focus on love and the truth will out.

  • Sensitive Strength

Not everyone will understand your sensitivity.

Nor should you expect them to.

You are responsible for knowing yourself, for protecting yourself, and for adapting to your surroundings and your relationships in such a way that your integrity remains intact.

The world is not going to adjust to your needs.

You must take care of your caring heart.

In order to honor your sensitive soul, there will be times when you will have to go your own way, forge your own path, and do your own thing.

Other times, you will have to stand your ground, resisting the forces that attempt to push and pull you in directions that do not serve you.

    Be sensitive to your sensitivity.

Listen to it and let it guide you, not away from life, but toward your life, your path, and your unique contribution to this world.

Allow your sensitivity to teach you to be your own person, your own advocate, and your own refuge.

Used in this way, your sensitivity becomes your strength.
