Meditations on God

  • Inspiration As Motivation

Don’t be so inspired that you do nothing.

    Inspiration can be intoxicating.

It is uplifting and emotionally satisfying.

But the purpose of inspiration is not simply to make you feel good.

The purpose of inspiration is to motivate you to action.

This causes tension, however, because if you act, you might fail, and so you settle for just being inspired.

Don’t be the type of person on whom inspiration is wasted.

  • The Edges

Your art is not for everyone.

    Create that which pleases you.

If you do it for others, it will fall flat.

    It will have no character.

The best art is not comfortable to make.

The best art feels vulnerable and risky.

The edges don’t feel safe, but it is in that discomfort where you will find your voice.

  • Your Unique Voice

Decide what kind of artist you want to be and get to work.

    There will always be self-doubt.

The fear of what others think will never fully leave you.

    Do your work anyway.

You cannot do work that matters while also avoiding vulnerability.

    Make art bravely.

Be yourself and let your unique voice be heard through your work.

  • Remain Hopeful

    Above all else, remain hopeful.

Life will not always be easy.

You will experience tragedy, loss, and pain.

Some days, the bad will seem to outweigh the good.

The way forward may not be obvious.

    Everything passes in time.

    Work hard, but remain hopeful.

  • Focus Is A Decision

There is always an excuse to not do your creative work.

    Creative work is still work.

    It is not easy.

    It requires dedication.

    It requires effort.

    Distractions are abundant.

    Focus is a decision.
