Meditations on God

  • Robert Van Valkenburgh

  • Without Approval

Decide who you want to be and who you want to serve.

    Be yourself bravely.

    Serve your people generously.

Don’t allow fear of what others may think hold you back.

Don’t allow fear of failure to hold you back.

People will doubt you and criticize you, and failure is always an option.

Every moment you spend waiting for approval or reassurance is a time and energy wasted on something you cannot control.

    approval, failure, fear, permission

  • Worthwhile Ideas

You can waste your whole life having ideas and doing nothing with them.

An idea not followed by action is just a daydream.

Of course, not all ideas should be acted upon.

The timing may not be right or the idea may simply be bad.

But you must be clear with yourself which ideas are important and then act accordingly.

You are going to make mistakes.

But it is better to make mistakes in pursuit of something worthwhile than in retreat from fear.

  • Not A Straight Line

    Have a plan.

    Take action.

    Meet resistance.

    Adjust.

    Repeat.

Do this until you are successful.

Success is not a straight line.

    achievement, resistance, success

  • Create Problems

You will solve more problems by creating problems than by thinking about problems.

Planning will only take you so far.

Once you have a reasonable plan, it is time to take action, lest you plan yourself into paralysis.

You need to get your hands dirty.

You need to put yourself in a position to fail.

The real work is done in the work not in your head.

You will never create the problems you need to solve without first being willing to have problems.

  • Too Nice To Be Useful

It is possible to be too nice.

You can be so nice that you have no opinion and no real point of view.

You can be so nice that you do not stand for anything and are of no real use to anyone.

You can be so nice that people walk all over you and take advantage of you.

Being nice in this way is a form of hiding, and it does not serve you or anyone else.

The aim is not to be nice, but to be good.

You will find that you are much happier, kinder, and more useful when goodness, not niceness, is your focus.
