  • Improvement On Perspective

    Life is full of challenges.

No one really has it easy.

    We all struggle.

Our struggles may not look or feel like the struggles others face, but we all struggle in our own way.

The quality of our life is largely determined, therefore, not by if, but by how we struggle.

How we handle the challenges we we face from day to day will have a major impact on our overall perspective on life.

More importantly, however, our perspective on life has an even greater impact on the way that we handle the challenges we face from day to day.

If we can change our perspective on life, we can change the way that we live it.

The challenges life throws at us are what they are.

We do not have very much control over when, how, and in what form they manifest.

We can, however, change the way that we perceive these challenges.

We can change our perspective so that we view life’s challenges as opportunities for growth instead of setbacks.

By changing our perspective in this way, we begin to embrace our struggles instead of resisting or avoiding them.

An improvement made on our perspective, even a minor one, has the ability to transform our entire life and the lives of those around us in untold ways.

    (Inspired by my friend Barney)

  • Perspective On Improvement

Improvement that comes too quickly is easily taken for granted.

When we do not have to work for our progress, when it comes to us without much effort, we begin to believe that we deserve it.

We begin to see ourselves as special, when we may simply be lucky.

Having to struggle for improvement keeps us humble.

Having to fight for whatever progress we experience, makes us appreciate it more than when it simply comes to us.

This does not mean that we should seek to struggle where it is not necessary to do so.

But, we should not lose sight of the fact that improvement is not promised to us.

It is earned through effort, sacrifice, and persistence.

Even when progress comes to us easily, we must not assume that it is something owed to us.

We must remember that even the opportunity to improve at something, especially if it is something we enjoy, is a luxury.

While we strive to improve, others are struggling just to survive.

  • Choosing To Help

Our ability to help others is one of our greatest gifts to give.

As with all gifts, it should be cared for, protected, and not given away thoughtlessly.

We do not have infinite resources.

We only have so much time, energy, and attention to offer others.

We must, therefore, be careful who we choose to help and in what way.

Not everyone wants or needs our assistance.

Nor will everyone who is in need willingly accept what we have to offer.

Time spent attempting to help someone who either does not want it or does not need it is time not spent helping someone who does.

  • Fear And Consequence

When we experience fear, it is quite often a sign that what we are doing is important.

If what we are doing is of no real consequence, if there is no risk involved, or if it simply does not matter to us or to others, there is no reason to be afraid.

But, when what we are doing matters, when our success or failure has consequences, even if those consequences are only emotional, of course we will be frightened.

It is quite likely, in fact, that the more important our task, the more fear we will experience as we face it.

Important actions always come with the risk of failure.

    And, failure feels awful.

Failure, itself, is not really what we are afraid of, however.

We are most frightened by all that comes with failure.

The embarrassment, humiliation, and shame we may experience because of our failure is what we are truly afraid of.

In other words, we fear not being loved and supported in our failure.

We are afraid that we will be ridiculed, shunned, and abandoned for it.

We fear that our inherent worth as a human being rests solely on our success or lack thereof in this exact moment and this specific endeavor, and, if we fail, that we will not be given a second chance.

    These are very real fears.

No one can promise us that they will not come true.

If we let this stop us, however, we will never do anything worthwhile.

  • Patience Through Discomfort

We never know how strong we are until we are tested.

Even then, we do not actually know our strength until we have reached the other side of the test.

This may take a long time.

In fact, the waiting, itself, is often part of the test.

Sometimes, the waiting actually is the test.

So long as we do not quit until we see things through, we will discover just how courageous and resilient we truly are.

But, that is the difficult part.

Most of us quit before we see what we are capable of and who we can become.

It is easy to quit, to retreat, and to withdraw into the dubious comfort of who we have always been.

If we ever want to achieve victory over self, we must first master patience through discomfort.
