Meditations on God

  • Attention Or Connection

Attention is not the same as connection.

    Attention offers only brief satisfaction.

It lasts only as long as the experience itself.

    Then, it is gone.

Attention leaves us wanting and needing more.

Connection, on the other hand, fulfills us.

It gives our lives hope, meaning, and purpose.

Connection travels with us through time and space.

It stays with us far beyond fleeting experiences.

Connection is an ongoing experience, a living bond that grows, evolves, and improves over time.

Often, we think we want or need attention, but connection is actually what we are after.

We should not compromise and settle for attention when connection is what we truly seek.

Connection may be difficult to find, develop, and maintain, but it is worth the effort.

Once we experience real, deep, and meaningful connection in our lives, we will never want to settle for attention again.

  • Yesterday’s Successes

The things that make us successful in one circumstance may very well cause us to fail in another.

We have to consider context when planning and taking action.

We cannot assume that what used to work for us will continue to work as our circumstances change.

As our lives evolve, so too must our strategies, tactics, and behaviors.

Yesterday’s successes may have gotten us to where we are now, but they will not take us further.

We need new ideas, new attitudes, and new actions.

    We need new successes.

We cannot rest on our laurels.

We are only as good as the future we create.

  • From Struggling To Service

It is very difficult to make a case against the fact that a fulfilling, meaningful life must include some amount, perhaps a large amount, of service to others.

There is simply too much evidence to deny that helping those in need, regardless of degree, helps us as well.

Helping others makes us happier, less self-centered, and more optimistic about life in general.

It gives us a sense of purpose and satisfaction, while also empowering us to feel as though we are capable of making a difference in the world.

Additionally, no honest, mature, and intelligent person could possibly look around and sincerely claim that there is no one who needs some sort of help that he or she can offer.

Someone, somewhere needs some kind of assistance, whether it be emotional, physical, or material, that is well within our means.

We do not need to over-extend ourselves.

In fact, we should not over-extend ourselves.

We have needs also and can help no one if we ignore or deny these.

Still, it is quite possible to help others while also attending to our basic needs.

In fact, a good argument could be made for the fact that the more we are struggling, the more we should turn our attention to helping others.

Not only will helping others help us to feel better about ourselves, our circumstances, and the world in general, but it also builds connections and community, both of which are essential for our personal growth and prosperity.

  • The Responsibility of Purpose

Most people spend their entire lives not knowing why they are here.

They struggle with not having any real direction, meaning, or purpose.

They move from one thing to the next, from one day to the next, seeking something to believe in, something to hold onto, something to guide them, and something or someone to be in service to.

We have all been in this place at one point or another, perhaps many, many times throughout the our lives.

    We have all been lost.

We have all experienced doubt, confusion, and aimlessness.

But, for those of us so fortunate to have found our calling, to know why we are here and what we have to do, it is important, critical even, that we do not take this for granted.

This gift of purpose, direction, and meaning is difficult to come by.

Many, many people have died in search of their purpose, never having truly found it.

If we have been so fortunate as to have discovered our purpose, if we have found our way or have been shown it, if we have experienced the joy, fulfillment, and immense blessings that come with this rare and beautiful gift, we have a responsibility to pursue it.

We owe it to ourselves, to those around us, and to those who have come before us or will come after, to act, to do something, and to move in the direction of what we know is true.

If, on the other hand, we take this for granted, if we ignore it, and we choose something else instead, there will be consequences.

Once we discover our purpose, we will suffer if we turn our back on it.

Rightfully, even if tragically so, perhaps.

Our purpose is a responsibility to pursue.

  • What We Value

Other people will not always care about how we choose to direct our efforts.

They will not care about what we value and dedicate ourselves to.

Most likely, they will care more about what is important to them, what benefits them, and what serves to push their agenda, goals, and lives forward.

What we think is important may be entirely different from what they think is important.

It is not up to us to change their minds.

    We probably can’t anyway.

Our goal should be to be of service.

Instead of trying to convince others of how and why what we want, value, and strive for is what’s best, we should try to see things from their perspective.

We should try to be understanding.

And, most importantly, we should do our best to be helpful.

What we may come to find, over time, is that helping others get what they want, as long as we do so with integrity and sincerity, is actually the most direct path to getting what we want.

    Helping others helps us.
