Meditations on God

  • Robert Van Valkenburgh

  • Grounded In Humility

We must be careful to not allow the gifts of the spirit to distract us from the spirit itself.

The gifts are not the giver.

Nor are we defined by the gifts bestowed upon us.

The truth of our existence can only be found in and sustained through humility.

Humility keeps us grounded in the spirit so that we do not get carried away by what we feel that we lack or what we are fortunate enough to receive.

Only through humility can we stay the course as our path narrows.

Humility allows us to be led by the spirit so that we are not led away by everything else.

  • Live Now

We can work really hard our whole lives just to end up too unhealthy to enjoy ourselves later.

Conversely, can also not work really hard our whole lives just to end up in the same condition.

Unless tragedy strikes, we all either grow old, grow ill, or both before we inevitably pass away.

We do not know what the future holds in store for us, but we can be certain that the day will come when, for one reason or another, we are incapable of doing what we wished we had done sooner.

If we wait until the timing is right, the money is right, or the circumstances are right to do these things, we may find that it is too late.

The perfect opportunity to do the things we desire or dream about will never arrive for, by the time it does, we may no longer be able to do anything about it.

    We must live now.

    We must act now.

We should not necessarily act hastily, recklessly, and with no thought for the future, but, then again, maybe sometimes we should act hastily, recklessly, and with no thought for the future.

  • Strength From Weakness

The things we see in ourselves that are most objectionable to us, may in fact be our greatest assets.

It may simply be a matter of how these character traits are applied.

What we perceive as our greatest weaknesses might just be strengths that have been misdirected.

Once we find the correct direction for our efforts, what once caused us pain and friction may now bring us joy and momentum.

We are who we are and there is a place for us in this world wherein our unique gifts, characters, and perspectives are needed and wanted.

That we have not yet found this place does not mean we are broken.

It only means we have not yet arrived at our purpose.

  • Truth In Service

It is not a secret that helping others makes us feel better about ourselves and our lives.

It frees us from our self-centered problems and feelings for a little while and gives us a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

A problem arises, however, when we help others in a way that compromises our values, violates our integrity, or causes us to give more than we are capable of.

This type of giving leads to regret, remorse, and resentment.

It makes us feel worse about ourselves and it strains our relationships.

Truth be told, it is not actually helpful to those we are aiming to serve either.

In fact, it is more an act of cowardice than it is an act of service.

When we are unable or unwilling to speak up for ourselves to say that we are uncomfortable with what is being asked of us and merely go along to get along, it starts to eat at us.

It drives a wedge into our soul and divides us from ourselves.

The longer that we move in this way, the more alienated we become from who we truly are and are meant to be.

The result is that we become strangers to ourselves and our purpose.

Lost, confused, and angry, we cast blame, but deep down we know that if only we would have had the courage to say no in the beginning, things would be so much different now.

We would be so much different now.

When we find ourselves in this place, it is easy to lash out and to blame others for our situation, but that will only make things worse.

Instead, we must look inward and get honest.

We must figure out where we went wrong and do our best to make it right.

And, we must gracefully bow out of whatever situations or relationships are causing us so much discomfort so that we can reaffirm our values, rebuild our integrity, and regain our center so that we can begin to truly be of service from our hearts and our truth.

  • Worthy Of A Good Life

There is no prize for being the most cynical person in the room.

No one is going to celebrate us because of our unhappiness, especially when it is self-imposed.

People do not think more highly of us when we play the victim, complain, or criticize others over and over again.

We will not be remembered fondly for adding more negativity to the world.

But, it is so easy to do.

    Optimism takes effort.

    Happiness is a choice.

Kindness, graciousness, and generosity are decisions we must make every day if we want them to become habits, if we want them to transform us into something better.

It is still unlikely that we will get a prize for being optimistic.

We may still go entirely uncelebrated throughout our lives, even in our happiness, especially when it is self-generated.

People may not think more highly of us when we are forgiving, complimentary, or compassionate, over and over again.

This is not why we should do or be these things, however.

We should do better and be better because it makes us feel better.

That others will necessarily benefit from it, even if we get no credit, recognition, or appreciation for it, is merely a byproduct of our efforts.

Our lives are worthy of being good because, even in our flaws, failings, and fragility, we are worthy of having good lives.

That is reason enough to smile.
