Meditations on God

  • Robert Van Valkenburgh

  • Creative Work

Creative work is best done for the sake of itself.

It should still be seen as work, however, in that we show up every day and put in the time and effort required to create.

Like all worthwhile things in life, creativity rewards discipline.

If we are to live as creative beings, the creative process must become our vocation for the sake of itself.

The work is the reward. The art is the result.

  • Tolerating The Intolerable

Abuse is not meant to be tolerated.

There are situations or circumstances, however, wherein our very survival may depend upon our ability to tolerate the otherwise intolerable.

If we can do this and it does not break us in the process, we will be stronger, wiser, and hopefully more compassionate for the experience.

And yet, abuse is not meant to be tolerated.

  • A Life of Depth

There is no depth without openness.

There is no openness without vulnerability.

There is no vulnerability without risk.

In order to experience the depths of love, of joy, and of intimacy, we must be willing to risk also experiencing the depths of pain, sorrow, and loneliness.

For what makes life so precious is death.

And what makes life worth living is depth.

  • Infinity Remembering Itself

We are not our fears, our worries, expectations, or anticipation.

Nor are we our shame, remorse, or regret.

We are not even who we imagine ourselves to be…

any more than are we who others think or say we are.

We are simultaneously so much more and so much less than these.

    Our essence cannot be defined.

It has no boundaries nor limitations.

Beneath and beyond all of our ideas, opinions, beliefs, presumptions, and prejudices, our true selves await patiently to be discovered.

    We are infinity remembering itself.

  • You Are Spirit

    Relax your gaze

    Unfurrow your brow

Exhale deeply and allow your tension to fall away

As your body refills with breath

Feel the spirit enter you from above and below

Filling your body with light and love

Know in your heart that you, too, are this light and love

For where your finitude ends, the infinite begins

Your limitations exist only in your stories

The spirit has no boundaries, no beginning, and no end

    The spirit tells no stories

    It is

    You are spirit

    Be
