to prayer
to the silence
to the quiet
secret place
inside you
with no expectations
no anticipation
there is nowhere to go
nothing to do
no one to be
in the stillness
this is the practice
the showing up

God I know you love me
because of the good works
you have done in me
greater than a bird
given flight
a flower
blooming in the sun
and the ocean waves
washing upon the shore
is your spirit within me
guiding
shaping
changing me
for your purpose
and my joyful salvation

thoughts race in
distracting me from you
like leaves atop a river
drawing my attention
away from you
the current
beneath me
around me
upon which I float
but with a word
with a breath
the leaves are set free
I am not the leaves
I am the river
in you
and you are the river
in me

He is not merely
who I say He is
nor only
who I want Him to be
for then He would be
made in my image
and my understanding
rather than me
being made in His image
out of His love
and for His purpose
if God is anything
God is who God is
beyond my limitations
and greater
than my understanding

where there is only
sorrow and despair
kneel down to pray
and you will be heard
