  • Pain Without Growth (Unhealthy Relationships)

    Relationships are difficult.

In fact, the most meaningful, worthwhile relationships come with many unexpected challenges, obstacles, and burdens that will force you to grow in ways you never anticipated.

That is to say, relationships create friction.

But there is a difference between healthy and unhealthy friction.

Healthy friction, even if it does not always feel good, will force you to change in positive ways, whereas unhealthy friction will simply wear you down over time, causing pain without growth.

Simply put, if you find yourself forced to compromise your health in order to be in a relationship with someone, that is, by definition, an unhealthy relationship.

  • Trustworthy Counsel

You need other people in your life who will tell you when you are wrong.

When you are your only counsel, you are susceptible to all manner of deceit and delusion.

In solitude, the voices of pride, ego, and fear are quite convincing.

It is easy to get caught up in your own ideas, opinion, and beliefs, to lose perspective on reality and to be convinced you are right when, in fact, you are anything but.

Having trustworthy counsel, people who care about you and who want to see you succeed, or at least not fail, will keep you on course when you begin drifting into a world of self deception.

  • Valuable Relationships

Associate with people with whom you can agree when it matters most.

You do not have to agree on everything.

In fact, it is undesirable to only associate with people with whom you always agree.

You need friction in order to grow.

However, it is important to know that those closest to you share the same fundamental values as you, that, when it matters most, you can work together for the common good of the relationship.

These relationships are not merely of additive value in your life.

The value of these relationships is exponentially greater than the sum of their individual parts.

  • Giving That Matters

Giving of yourself to those who do not appreciate it or who take advantage of it is akin to stealing.

They are not stealing from you, but rather you are stealing from others.

By giving your most precious resources, your time and attention, to people who do not value what you are giving, you are robbing those who are genuinely need and will appreciate your help of the ability to receive it.

For this reason, you must learn to be discerning with what parts of yourself you give and to whom you give them.

There is deep joy and fulfillment in giving freely of yourself to those who need and want your help and you owe it to yourself and them to be available when the opportunity arises.

  • Helpful Experience

Take a moment to reflect on how far you have come.

All of your experiences, whether perceived as good or bad, have brought you here.

These experiences, along with the wisdom and perspective they have given you, are your unique superpower.

No one else has experienced the world exactly as you have and, therefore, no one else can help others in exactly the way that you are able to.

Find a way to transform your regrets into gratitude and watch the world open up before your eyes.
