  • More Of You

If you think too much about how your creative work is going to be received, your work will change.

You will start to steer yourself toward what you think others want instead of what you feel compelled to create.

    This is a mistake.

The value of your creative work is rooted in your unique perspective.

When you start creating from the perspective of what others may or may not like, you lose sight of what makes your work special.

You are what makes your work special.

The values, vision, and aesthetic choices that you bring to your work are what make it your work.

Once you are influenced by what you think others prefer, your work begins to lose its character.

Make the art that you are compelled to make and your art will be compelling.

Put something new and special and strange into the world.

Show us what you see and let it change our perspective.

We do not need more of what we already like.

    We need more of you.

  • Your Audience

You cannot please everyone with your creative work.

It is a mistake to even try.

You must know who your audience is.

That is where you should focus your attention.

And your audience starts with you.

If your creative work does not please you, it is not likely to please anyone else either.

Not only that, if your creative work does not please you, it will not be sustainable.

This is not to say that you must enjoy all work that you do or that you will be pleased with all of your creative output.

It is to say, however, that when you are doing creative work, you should start with work that you actually want to create.

Develop the skills that result in art that pleases you.

Hone your craft along these lines and you will have something unique and special to offer the world.

As you put your work into the world, those who are pleases by what you are pleased by will begin to seek you out.

This is your audience and these people are your tribe.

  • The Freedom of Routines

    Routines override excuses.

When you create a routine for yourself, you do not need a reason to do that which you have set out to do.

You do what you need to do because it is time to do that thing.

This removes the need for motivation as well as excuses.

You do not need to think about what needs to be done or whether or not you want to do it.

You do it because that is your routine.

This may sound boring or monotonous, but the truth is that routines free you up to do things that are fun or interesting because that which is necessary is already out of the way.

If you make them part of your routine, the difficult things take care of themselves and leave you room for everything else.

In this way, routines actually give you freedom.

Find a way to structure your life around that which is necessary and you will find that you have much more time for that which is desirable.

Not only that, you will feel lighter and freer knowing that the work is out of the way.

  • The Effort You Put In

Once you have done everything you can to prepare for success, the outcome of your endeavors is out of your hands.

Worrying will not make things go more smoothly.

What is going to be is going to be.

If you have truly done your best, you need to find peace in that fact.

If your preparation was not enough, no amount of fretting will improve the outcome.

If your preparation was enough, worry will only make your experience of the situation worse.

Do your best and then let go of the results.

You cannot control the results anyway.

You can only control the effort you put into the process.

  • Embracing Friction

We often get set in our ways because they have seemed to work for us thus far.

They brought us to this point, after all.

We are blinded by our own perceived success.

We cannot see what we cannot see and we cannot see what others see.

So we do not know if another way is better than what we have been doing.

We keep going in our own direction until we get stuck.

Failure is sometimes the only thing that can make us change our minds and change our ways.

This is why challenging ourselves is so important.

If we are not putting ourselves into situations that are difficult, wherein our limits are being tested, we are much more likely to have ideas, opinions, and make all sorts of presumptions with no way of knowing if they are true or not.

Our attitudes and habits are tested with friction.

If we avoid friction, we are more likely to remain ignorant of our errors in judgement.

The best way, therefore, to get on the right side of truth is to be willing to be wrong and to put ourselves in a position to fail.
