Meditations on God

  • On Impulse

    Our impulses betray us.

They do not care about consequences or collateral damage.

They do not care about feelings or relationships.

    They demand action without forethought.

    They only want satisfaction.

But, it is not our satisfaction they want.

    It is their own.

And, they do not care what or who they destroy in order to get it.

If we are not careful, our impulses will leave us defeated and alone.

We deserve better and the people around us do as well.

  • Limitations And Expectations

We must learn to accept that some people are not capable of that which we expect or need from them.

It is quite possible that this is because our expectations are too high.

Or, it could also be because the task itself is too difficult.

    We all have our limitations.

When another person’s limitations make them incapable of meeting our expectations, we should not be hurt or angered.

    We should be thankful.

    At least now we know.

This knowledge will help us to be more successful in our endeavors in the future.

It will help us to better match our expectations with the people who are capable of meeting them.

Or, it will help us to change our expectations.

We will never be content unless we can find a balance between reality and our expectations.

  • Fear Is Just A Feeling

Fear makes us think, say, and do all sorts of strange things.

It warps our perspective so that everything looks, sounds, and feels different.

Fear makes life seem more hostile and threatening than it may actually be.

Where we were once confident, fear gives us doubts.

Where we were once strong, fear makes us feel weak.

Where we were once safe, fear makes us feel vulnerable.

The thing about fear, though, is that as real and paralyzing as it may seem when it grips us, fear is only a feeling.

This is not said to make light of fear’s power.

Fear is one of the most powerful forces on earth.

But, it only exists inside of us.

Fear has very little to do with what is going on in the world around us and much more to do with how we perceive, process, and respond to our environment, circumstances, and relationships.

Of course, life can be frightening, but our fear is ours, not the world’s.

It is up to us, therefore, to decide whether we want to be controlled by it or to act rationally and courageously in spite of it.

  • Distractions And Detours

As we walk our path, from time to time, we will be get distracted.

Sometimes these distractions will cause us to stray off course.

    This is an inevitability.

In fact, one could say that this, too, is part of the path.

But, our goal should be to ensure that, when go astray, we recognize it as quickly as possible, learn whatever lessons we were meant to learn, right whatever wrongs we are meant to right, and then get back on track before it is too late to do so.

After all, it is possible to go too far in the wrong direction, so far, in fact, that we never find our way back.

We do not want what could have been a mere detour to become a dead end.

  • Flexible Strength

We must not allow circumstances that are outside of our control to turn us into someone we do not want to be.

Circumstances, whether good or bad, come and go.

We must stay vigilant with our character and integrity.

We must remain strong in who we are and true to ourselves.

However, our strength must also be tempered with flexibility.

If we are not flexible in our strength, as we are pushed and pulled by the circumstances we face, we will either waver in our principles or we will break under the forces applied against us.
