Meditations on God

  • Make Your Art

Your art does not care if you have other things to do.

It is not interested in your excuses or your explanations.

It just wants to be made.

Your art is waiting for you to bring it to life.

And you are the only one who can do it.

No one else has your eye, your ear, your voice, or your touch.

No one else has your perspective or your experiences.

Only you can make your art your way.

That is why you are called to do it.

That is why it hurts so bad to walk away from it and to try to ignore or deny it.

    But you are scared.

You are afraid that it is all a lie, that this work is not important, that you are not good enough, and that no one cares.

    Do it anyway.

Make art like your life depends on it.

    Maybe it does.

  • Your Influence

You never truly know the influence you have over the lives of others.

Even if they tell you, it will give you a superficial understanding at best.

    Words fall short.

They do not tell the whole story.

The influence you have on others is experienced at a level deeper than logic or reason can understand or explain.

    It goes deeper than emotion.

    We affect each other cellularly.

Everything you do and say, even what you think and feel, changes everything and everyone around you regardless of whether or not you or they know it.

In your own small way, you have the power to change the world.

Through your words, deeds, thoughts, and feelings, you get to decide whether you want to change it for better or for worse.

  • Limiting Your Own Potential

What you think is making you successful, may, in fact, be the thing that is holding you back.

    Success can be extremely deceptive.

It does not tell you what you are doing wrong.

Nor does it tell you what you are missing or could be doing better.

Your attitudes, opinions, and behaviors have brought you this far, but they could also be the things that are keeping you from reaching your true potential.

You may think you are doing well with your relationships, occupation, and personal goals, but you must always consider the fact that you could be doing better.

This means you have to be willing to be wrong and to have enough humility to admit this, to right your course, and to start over.

Of course, this is not easy to do.

The longer we have held some attitude, belief, or opinion, the more difficult it is to let it go.

The alternative, however, is for your life to stay the same.

While this is fine when things are going well, it is not so fine when things start to fall apart.

  • Practice Your Art

Take every chance you can to practice your art.

Seek out reasons to be creative.

Look for excuses to be inspired.

Find a way to make something.

Turn whatever you are doing into a reason to practice your craft.

    You do not need permission.

Do not wait for opportunity to find you.

    Make something.

    Make lots of things.

Keep making things until your work is good enough to share and then make some more.

No one starts as a great artist or craftsperson.

The only way to get where you want to be is through practice and you can practice now.

The world is your medium and life is your muse.

  • Courage Is Compounding

Every time you act courageously, you are changed.

With every courageous act, you, yourself, become more courageous.

This does not mean that you will have no fear.

You may never be truly fearless.

It would not be good if you were.

Rather, it means that you have more confidence in facing the fears that you do have.

And the more you face your fears, the more faith you have in your ability to overcome them.

Fear begins to lose its power over you.

The obstacles that stand in your way start to feel smaller and less overwhelming.

You may even begin to look forward to the opportunity to face your fears.

You may begin to seek out challenges that you would have previously shied away from.

You start to realize that fear is just a feeling and that actions are more powerful than feelings.

In this way, courage is compounding.

The effort you put into courageous action is given back to you many times over in the form of gifts you could not have imagined when you took your first step into your fear.
