Meditations on God

  • Inward And Forward

It is easy to get distracted by what other people are doing, what other people are enjoying in their lives, or what other people are benefiting from.

Not only is this unhealthy, but it also prevents us from being able to focus on our lives, our experiences, and our purpose.

What other people have or do is not for us.

Their lives are not ours and our lives are not theirs.

Our attention needs to be on our path, on our purpose, and on our relationships.

We need to do our best to improve at who we are from day to day.

We cannot do this while watching or following other people.

Our focus needs to be on what we are doing, where we are going, and who we are going there with.

Through this, will begin to realize that we are not missing out on anything.

What other people have is theirs.

    What we have is ours.

Our task is to look inward and we need to look forward.

  • Choosing Presence

It is our responsibility to make time to appreciate the little things.

No one else is going to do it for us.

Time does not slow down to accommodate us.

We have to make the conscious choice to be present and to be grateful.

This is a choice we have to make over and over again.

    It is easy to forget.

It is easy to get distracted.

It is easy to take things for granted.

But, if we do not stop to appreciate what we have now, we will look back on this moment and wish that we had.

    Now is the time.

    This is our opportunity.

  • Following Through

Once we commit to something, our feelings about it are really of no consequence.

Whether we feel like doing it or not, if we have made a commitment, the thing must be done.

    Our feelings will fool us.

They do not consider our future, our reputation, or our relationships.

They only care about their own immediate gratification.

This is why it is more important to be reliable than authentic.

It is more important to be consistent than it is to be passionate.

Of course we should not pretend to be someone else.

Of course we should put our hearts into our work.

But, a commitment is a commitment regardless of whether or not we feel the same now as we did when we agreed to it or signed up for it.

Our job is not to follow our feelings, it is to follow through on our commitments.

  • Purpose Or Patience

Being aimlessly busy is just as counterproductive as being lazily idle.

In fact, it may be more so.

The problem with being aimlessly busy is that it has the potential to take us quite far off track without our ever even noticing.

The busier we are with no clear direction, the farther we go.

Without a goal, a purpose, or a plan, this can lead to disaster.

We may find ourselves many days, months, or years later, lost, not knowing who or where we are, with no idea how we got here or how to get back.

    Busyness itself is a distraction.

It is a means of procrastinating, of ignoring or avoiding what is necessary.

What we need is not busyness.

What we need is purposeful action in a clear direction with a well-defined goal.

But, if we do not have that, what we need is patience.

  • Pursued By Regret

Our regrets will chase us, but our dreams will not.

    Dreams must be pursued.

    They must be sought after.

They will not come after us.

We must put in the effort to follow them, to reach for them, and to bring them to life.

Waiting only puts us further away from our dreams.

And, the further away we get from them, the closer our regrets get to us.

If we do not catch our dreams, regret will surely catch us.

Once it does, it is very difficult to shake off.

But, our dreams remain our dreams until they are fulfilled.

    They do not go away.

    We do.

It is not too late to do something for our dreams now that we will not regret later.
