Meditations on God

  • What If

God does not exist in “what if.”

“What if” is the home of fear, anxiety, and expectation.

It is the place where hope and anticipation live, but where presence and appreciation die.

God does not exist in the future of our imaginations.

He does not reside in our wishes or worries.

    God exists in what is.

His spirit is found in the quiet patience of this very moment.

It is only here and now where we will find comfort, peace, and rest in His embrace.

But, we cannot look for it or we will miss it.

God’s love is neither sought nor found.

It is already within us and around us, gifted to us in all moments.

We need only acknowledge it and accept it.

  • Freedom From Fear

Our fears can come true even if we hide from them.

Whether we face our fears with courage or we do our best to ignore, deny, or run away from them, they still may manifest.

What value, then, is there in hiding from our fears?

Hiding does not actually make that which we fear go away.

It only makes our lives smaller, not that which we fear.

That which we fear remains until we face it.

Facing our fears is the only way to make them go away.

It is not guaranteed to do so, but not facing them guarantees that they remain.

There is risk either way, but only the choice to face and overcome our fears offers us the possibility of freedom.

  • The Will To Continue

No matter how hard we try or how much we give, it still may not be enough.

We can do our absolute best, leaving nothing behind, but we still may fall short of our goals or aspirations.

This is simply part of life.

We cannot be everything or have everything.

    We are only human.

We have limited potential and limited resources at our disposal.

We can only do so much.

But, as long as we have given our all, as long as we have done everything we could have to be successful, there is no use grieving over our perceived failures.

It is far better to accept the truth of our situation for what it is and to use that truth as a platform for whatever growth is available to us than to feel sorry for ourselves for coming up short of what we had aspired to and using that as an excuse to do nothing.

The best way to ensure our failure is to think that one setback or a series of setbacks determines our fate.

Our fate is only determined by our will to either carry on or to quit come what may.

We cannot control what obstacles we will face, but we can control how we will face them.

  • Fleeting Moments

We only get so many moments in a day before it has passed us by, never to return.

Within each of these moments is an opportunity.

We can either cherish and enjoy these moments for the precious gift that they are or we can squander them with endless distractions and desires.

Whatever we choose to do with these moments, they are the only moments we get.

We cannot slow down, stop, or reverse time.

It continues to move on regardless of how we show up for it.

  • Drowning From Tension

    Tension sinks us.

    It weighs us down.

That is why, when we are learning how to swim, we must be told, or even taught, to relax.

When faced with a new challenge, our natural instinct is to tense up as a means of trying to protect ourselves from that which frightens us.

But, this only makes our situation worse.

It slows us down, holds us back, and may even drown us in our very attempt to self-protect.

If we want to survive and someday even thrive, we must learn how to relax.

We have to rise above the forces that feel like they are trying to pull us down.

If we can make friends with that which frightens us, we may even come to enjoy the challenge.
