• Communicating Expectations

  You cannot expect others to do things the way you would do them.

  Nor can you expect others to see things your way or to read your mind.

  These are unrealistic expectations and having them is setting yourself up for disappointment.

  If you want others to be on the same page as you, you have to communicate.

  You have to learn to express yourself in a way that your intentions and expectations are clear and easily understood.

  The onus is not on others to understand you.

  If you want to be understood, it is your responsibility to make yourself understandable.

• Setting Expections

  Having unreasonable standards for other people only makes you less happy.

  People are going to be who they are.

  Your expectations won’t change them.

  It’s okay to expect that the people close to you are honest, kind, and generally decent.

  It’s also okay to expect that people do what they say they will do when they say they will do it.

  However, aside from these baseline expectations, people are not going to conform to your standards simply because you wish it to be so.

  The sooner you can accept others as they are, instead of insisting they be who you want them to be, the happier you will be in your relationships.

• Not What You Expect

  The future is never going to be what you expect it to be.

  Things will rarely, if ever, turn out as well as you hope or as poorly as you fear.

  Time moves too fast for you to catch it with anticipation.

  It cannot be pinned down, controlled, or beaten into submission.

  The harder you try to grasp at life in your mind, the further you push it away from yourself.

  As you read this, the future has already come and gone.

  Did you expect to be here, now?

• Generous Or Not

  Generosity with expectation of reciprocity is not generous.

  This type of giving is transactional, not altruistic.

  Giving of yourself and expecting something in return, even acknowledgement or thanks, is not unreasonable, however.

  It is simply not generous.

  Be clear with your motives prior to giving of yourself or your resources.

  If you expect something in return, be honest about that, knowing that you are not being generous.

  If you are being generous, expect nothing in return and don’t complain when you get it.

• Blurred Feelings

  Highly sensitive people often do not know how they truly feel.

  Because they feel so much, including what others feel, it can be difficult to differentiate what is real from what is not.

  This is the downside of empathy.

  For highly sensitive people, the line between another person’s feelings and their own is often blurry.

  If not managed with firm boundaries and clear expectations, this emotional porousness can become confusing, frustrating, and exhausting.

  For this reason, highly sensitive people tend to need time alone to regroup and recharge.

  Too much time around others can make highly sensitive people lose sight of who they are, what they feel, and what they value.
