Meditations on God

  • One Reason

No matter how good your idea is and how passionate you are about it, there will be people who doubt you or who want you to doubt yourself.

They will do their best to give you reasons not to follow through.

They will express their fears, their concerns, and their justifications for your impending failure.

And they may even do this with the best of intentions.

They may mean well and they may truly believe they are looking out for you.

In fact, they may even be right.

    Failure is always an option.

But the truth is that there is no perfect idea, circumstance, or timing.

There will always be more reasons not to take the risk than to take the risk.

But you only need one reason to move forward.

You only need one reason to step into the arena.

And no one else needs to believe in your idea in order for you to take action on it.

You do not need permission to be brave.

    You simply need to commit.

  • Achieving Effective

Effective is often better than perfect.

Perfect is a concept used to procrastinate.

It is an excuse to not get the job done.

What we should really be after is not perfect, but effective.

Effective means we have accomplished our task.

It means our work is good enough to do the job it was designed for.

    Effective is an underrated standard.

    It is the first target.

    Aim for effective first.

Once your work is effective, then you can seek to make it perfect.

Effective achieved is better than perfection unrealized.

  • Changing Plans

Life has a funny way of changing your plans, or at least making you slow down to reevaluate your priorities.

No matter how committed you may be to the path you are on, some obstacle, hardship, or challenge will inevitably come in between you and your goals.

In these moments of difficulty, you will undoubtedly begin to question yourself.

You will start to wonder if you made the right decision, if you have the correct priorities, and if you should perhaps choose a different path.

    But this is the path.

The path is made of obstacles, hardships, and challenges that will make you question your convictions.

How you handle that which stands in between you and your goals is not merely a sign of your character; it defines your character.

  • Everything To Everyone

In order to take care of yourself, you must be willing and able to let other people take care of themselves.

You are not responsible for everyone else’s happiness, success, or wellbeing.

Do what you can to help others, especially those in your care, but also be mindful and respectful of where your responsibility ends and their responsibility begins.

If they are capable and competent, give them the space and freedom to express that.

Even if they are not, you are still not necessarily obliged to act on their behalf, so be sure before you do.

You cannot be everything to everyone, nor should you try.

Let the people around you be themselves and let them do their own work.

Help where you can, but never at the cost of your own obligations.

You have your own responsibilities that you are uniquely qualified for and capable of attending to, and these tasks deserve your undivided attention.

No one is going to fill your shoes while you are trying to fill everyone else’s.

Establish clear boundaries and do your best to maintain them.

Only you can be you, so let others be themselves.

  • The Logic Of Fear

Courage is not easily arrived at through logic.

In fact, in most cases, acts of bravery are not logical at all.

You need courage precisely to help you to overcome the rationality of your fears.

When you are faced with the opportunity to act bravely, you will be tempted to weigh your options.

You will want to consider the pros and cons of the choices that lie in front of you so that you can make the most logical decision possible.

Keep in mind, however, that fear sounds a lot like your own voice and it is very convincing.

Fear will give you every excuse, every explanation, and every justification you could possibly need to not act bravely.

Fear affords you the luxury to do nothing.

Courage, on the other hand, is difficult.

Courage is a decision and it is a decision that requires action.

Courage forces you to live intentionally while fear excuses you from living at all.

    Choose bravely.
