Please Yourself

Do what pleases you.

This is not a call to be selfish or hedonistic.

But when it comes to art, creativity, or any other kind of self expression, you are your most important audience.

Make what you would like to see, hear, taste, feel, or experience.

Draw, paint, write, sing, play, or build for yourself first.

Be your own number one fan.

If the world does not like what you make, so be it.

At least you like it.

If, on the other hand, your work or your art resonates with others, if they say, “This is for me. I am like you,” then you have found your audience.

You have found your true fans.

But if you try to make what others will like, they still may not like it.

What’s worse is that you will not like it either, and this is unsustainable.

So please yourself.

If nothing else, at least you will be doing work that you are proud of.
